Dear @Polymarket, @PolymarketHelp, @shayne_coplan, @HugoMartingale, and @nickbytes,
There is a heated debate going on in the Bitcoin community right now about removing the 80-byte OP_RETURN limit.
Please create a market that allows people to bet on the current OP_RETURN limit being removed!
MARKET TITLE: Will Bitcoin Core remove the 80-byte OP_RETURN limit in 2025?
OUTCOMES:
- Yes
- No
MARKET DESCRIPTION AND RESOLUTION CRITERIA:
This market tracks whether Bitcoin Core will remove the current 80-byte size restriction on OP_RETURN outputs by the end of 2025. OP_RETURN is a script opcode in Bitcoin that allows embedding arbitrary data into transactions. Currently, this data is limited to 80 bytes to prevent blockchain bloat and maintain Bitcoin's focus on monetary transactions. However, a proposal by Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd (PR #32359) suggests lifting this limit to accommodate evolving use cases like sidechains and cross-chain bridges.
This market will resolve to "Yes" if, by December 31, 2025, a version of Bitcoin Core is officially released where the default OP_RETURN size limit is removed or increased beyond 80 bytes. The change must be merged into the main Bitcoin Core repository and included in an official release.
